Invocation

Holy God, your tender mercies shine upon us like the dawn of a new day. Your light is the hope of all who sit in darkness, in the shadow of death. Be present in our worship this day, and guide our feet into the way of peace. With joy, we anticipate the coming of Christ, our Redeemer, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.  Amen.

Call to Confession

Let us affirm our hope in Christ, who came, who comes,

and who is to come:

Our Prayer of Confession and Pardon

O God, like the children of Israel, we have strayed from the path of righteousness.  We have treated Jesus’ birthday as if it were our own. We have found ourselves seeking the self, rather than yearning to bring gifts to our Lord.  We have overlooked our Savior.  Forgive us, we pray and lead us to the true joy of Christmas, now and forever.  Amen.

Hear the good news.  We are forgiven and called to new life through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Our sins are forgiven in the name of God; maker of love, giver of life, redeemer of all.  Amen.

Old Testament Lesson                                                    Malachi 3: 1-4

*The Holy Gospel Lesson                                            Luke 1: 68-79, Luke 3: 7-18

  This is the Word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

*Affirmation of Faith                                       The Apostles’ Creed

  I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth;

  And in Jesus Christ his only Son, our Lord;
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,

  suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, dead, and buried;
the third day he rose from the dead;
he ascended into heaven,
and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty;
from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

  I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.

*The Gloria Patri

  Glory be to the Father

  and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost;

  as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,

  world without end.  Amen.
