*Call to Worship

   Stuart Joerg
Leader: The Magi waited and watched knowing something wondrous would be happening.
People: We waited for the birth of Jesus; now something wondrous is about to take root.
Leader: The darkness has been banished by the light of the star.
People: The darkness that surrounds us is gone!
Leader: Let us celebrate the bright shining of God’s love in our lives.
All: Let us become those who bring the light of God’s love to others.  Amen.

God of mystery, in the darkness of our world, your light shines with grace and truth. Open the eyes of our hearts to the glory of your love. Speak your word of truth and joy. May the mystery revealed in Jesus draw us closer to you. May the wonder of your love fill us with wisdom and peace. Fill our hearts to overflowing with your joy, your glory, your hope – the brightness of his rising, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.  Amen.

*Hymn of Praise     Angels We Have Heard on High  UMH # 220

Our Prayer of Common Confession

O God, in this season it is so tempting to want to pretend all is well, to convince ourselves that our lives are as pretty as packages neatly wrapped.  Some of us ignore the pain and hurt of the world, assuming it doesn’t fit in this season.  Others of us see pain and imagine that it diminishes the true meaning of this season.  Forgive us all, O God, for in doing these things we fail to experience fully the power of your presence among us, a presence that does not deny our pain but breaks through it to show your peace in the midst of any storm.

Hear the good news:  Christ died for us while we were yet sinners; that proves God’s love for us.  In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven.

In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven!

Glory be to God.  Amen.

Prayers of Silent Confession

May the almighty and merciful Lord grant us remission of all our sins, true repentance, amendment of life, and the grace and consolation of the Holy Spirit.

In the name of Jesus Christ you are forgiven.

Glory be to God. Amen.

*Affirmation of Faith  The Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth;

And in Jesus Christ his only Son, our Lord;
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, dead, and buried;*
the third day he rose from the dead;
he ascended into heaven,
and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty;
from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic** church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.

*The Gloria Patri

  Glory be to the Father

  and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost;

  as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,

  world without end.  Amen.
